SNP Speed Limit Plans Will Punish Motorists and Harm Businesses.

Roz McCall MSP, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Member for Mid Scotland and Fife, has slammed the SNP’s latest attack on motorists as they push forward plans to slash the national speed limit on single carriageway roads from 60mph to 50mph.

Raising a parliamentary question on the matter, Roz McCall warned that these plans could significantly increase travel times across Mid Scotland and Fife, hampering productivity and slowing down vital transport links. She warned that these arbitrary changes will increase journey times, add to commuter frustration, and create further challenges for businesses that rely on Scotland’s already crumbling road network.

Roz McCall has urged the Scottish Government to seriously reconsider the proposed speed limit reductions and ensure that any changes are backed by clear evidence demonstrating genuine safety and environmental benefits without disproportionately affecting travel times rather than just rhetoric messages.

Roz McCall MSP said:

“The SNP’s war on motorists continues. Instead of delivering the road upgrades they’ve promised for nearly two decades, they’re punishing drivers with even more restrictions.

“Reducing the speed limit to 50mph on single carriageway roads will do nothing to cut down on dangerous driving - but it will penalise ordinary people.

“In rural areas like Mid Scotland and Fife, many workers have no choice but to rely on their cars to get to work. Businesses depend on these roads to transport goods and materials. Forcing a blanket speed limit cut on them will mean longer commutes, higher costs, and a further squeeze on people already struggling with travel times.

“An hour-long journey could now take twenty minutes longer. That’s a huge impact on workers, and hauliers who already battle delays due to Scotland’s deteriorating roads.

“Let’s be clear: roads like the A9, A96, A1, A75, A77, and A83 have become notorious for accidents, injuries, and deaths - not because of speed limits, but because the SNP has failed to deliver critical road improvements for nearly twenty years.

“Instead of finally fixing Scotland’s roads and ensuring they are safe for drivers, the SNP would rather introduce yet another restriction to cover up their failure.

“I have urged the Cabinet Secretary to carefully consider these consequences and scrap these illthought-out proposals immediately.”
