New figures obtained by the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party reveal that Fife has the second-highest number of pupils in Scotland missing more than 10% of the school year, with only Glasgow recording worse attendance rates.
In 2023-2024, 7,435 primary pupils (26.69%) and 9,695 secondary pupils (41.64%) in Fife missed over 10% of their school year. Alarmingly, 2,506 primary pupils (8.99%) and 4,507 secondary pupils (19.36%) missed more than 20%, while 348 primary pupils (1.25%) and 990 secondary pupils (4.25%) were absent for over half of the school year.
Roz McCall MSP, Shadow Minister for Children, Young People, and The Promise, and Member of Scottish Parliament for the Mid-Scotland and Fife Region, said:
“These statistics are deeply concerning and highlight an escalating crisis in our education system.
“Education is fundamental to success in life, yet thousands of young people in Fife are missing out on the opportunities they need to thrive.
“The SNP Government has been asleep at the wheel while this crisis has spiralled out of control.
“They have failed to act on school violence, leaving many pupils feeling unsafe, and have done little to tackle the root causes of poor attendance.
“The SNP’s inaction is failing our young people and jeopardising their futures, but Scottish Conservatives will continue to defend the right of every child to a quality education.
“Urgent action is needed to improve attendance and ensure that schools are safe, supportive environments for all pupils.”
