Roz McCall MSP, Scottish Conservative and Unionist representative for the Mid-Scotland and Fife region, has condemned NHS Fife’s appalling delayed discharge figures, revealed by Freedom of Information data to be the worst in Scotland among regions that reported their figures.
The data shows that Fife’s hospitals recorded an average delayed discharge of 854 days, with the longest delayed discharge standing at a shocking 2,576 days - over seven years.
Roz McCall says these figures expose the SNP’s complete failure to deliver on their 2015 promise to eradicate delayed discharge and called on SNP Health Secretary Neil Gray to take urgent action.
Roz McCall MSP said:
“Fife has the worst delayed discharge figures in Scotland, and that should be a badge of shame for this SNP Government.
“Nearly a decade has passed since the SNP pledged to eliminate delayed discharge, yet one patient in Fife has been stuck in hospital for over seven years. Meanwhile, the average delayed discharge in Fife hospitals is 854 days—levels that are utterly unacceptable in a modern healthcare system.
“This isn’t just about numbers - it’s about patients and families who are being let down. It’s about the knock-on effects for others in Fife who face longer A&E waits, cancelled operations, and added pressure on overworked healthcare staff.
“These figures should be a wake-up call for Neil Gray, a failing Health Secretary. The SNP must urgently focus on getting resources to the frontline and ensuring suitable care packages are available, instead of wasting money on bureaucracy and mismanagement. Fife’s patients and hardworking healthcare staff deserve better.”
